NORTHERN SPAIN CANTABRIA 13th - 22nd September 2010 Join Felix for a fascinating cruise and tour to Northern Spain, based in the quiet sea-side village resort of Isla, situated on the Cantabrian coast to the west of Bilbao, an easy drive along the coast road from the port. Isla is at one end of the Costa Verde - “The Green Coast” - of Spain’s northern coastline and within sight of the Picos de Europa mountain range. The Hotel Astuy (www.hotel-austuy.es) is situated in a superb position in the village resort of Isla, on low cliffs overlooking the beach, with spectacular panoramic views of the Cantabrian coastline in both directions. All bedrooms are en-suite and have colour TV. The restaurant, which looks out to sea, offers a menu of local produce especially seafood, there is a patio and sun terrace ideal for relaxing with a pre-dinner drink, and an outdoor swimming pool. In 2010 we shall have been visiting our friends at the Hotel Astuy for over 13 years - we wouldn’t keep going back if it wasn’t good - so book yourself on and experience a different kind of Spain !! Monday 13th Mid-morning departure from Ilkeston, travelling by coach to Portsmouth with refreshment stops as required. We hope to have some free time to explore Portsmouth or Southsea before we board the luxurious 37,000 ton Cruise Liner “Pride of Bilbao” for the evening sailing. Accommodation is in twin berth cabins with shower and toilet and facilities on board include two restaurants, lounges, cafes and bars, a disco, cinema, casino, duty-free shops and a superb leisure complex with swimming pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and solarium. Tuesday 14th A full day at leisure to enjoy the facilities on board the luxury Cruise Liner as we travel south towards the Spanish coast. Wednesday 15th We arrive in Bilbao on the northern coast of Spain at approx. 8.30am and rejoin the Felix coach. We drive up on to the altiplano (high plateau) of Spain and past vineyards to Haro where there will be time to buy an early lunch. We continue to Heredad Ugarte winery for a tour and wine tasting. We return to the coach and drive back down to the coast and our hotel at the village of Isla. Thursday 16th A morning and lunchtime excursion to the coastal resort of Castro Urdiales with free time to explore this small harbour town - the glazed facades along the esplanade, the magnificent Gothic church and the medieval fortress are all worth a visit. Return to the hotel in the afternoon. Friday 17th An optional day excursion into the heart of the Picos de Europa mountains, travelling first along the coast before turning inland into the spectacular natural gorge of Desfiladero de la Hermida, to the small old world town of Potes with its town square lined with cafes, bars and bistros. We return to our hotel in the afternoon via the fishing village of San Vincente de la Barquerra. Cost £10.00 - tickets from the driver. Saturday 18th A day tour to the preserved medieval village of Santillana del Mar, a World Heritage Site, with its cobbled streets, 12th Century buildings and famous church, or to the coastal town of Comillas, famous for its architecture including the Papal University and a building designed by the Spanish modernist, Gaudi. After lunch we continue to the coast visiting the small resort of Suances, with time to stroll along the beach or relax in a sea-front café. Sunday 19th Free day to enjoy the facilities of the hotel and to explore the village of Isla. No coach travel. Monday 20th A day tour visiting the city of Santander with its famous Cathedral, University buildings and modern shopping streets. In the afternoon we travel the short distance past the Palace to the resort area of Sardinero with its super beaches, tree lined promenade and famous Casino, with ample time for a relaxing drink in its terrace bar. Tuesday 21st We depart the hotel after breakfast making our way back to Bilbao, with a short stop at Castro, before re-joining the Cruise Liner for our return sailing to England. Wednesday 22nd After a day’s cruise on board the luxury Cruise Liner we arrive in Portsmouth late afternoon and travel back to Ilkeston area with refreshment stops as required, arriving late evening. Please note the following points of information *A full 10 year British passport with 6 months remaining validity is required for this holiday. *A small overnight bag, separate to your main suitcase, that you can EASILY CARRY ONTO THE SHIP will be required for the P & O Cruise Liner. *Tea/coffee making facilities in bedrooms are not normally provided in the hotel or on board the ship. *Vouchers for meals on board the Cruise Liner may be purchased in advance, see below. *Holiday Travel Insurance is required for this holiday.
